The identification as Vanir of Skaði, Lýtir, Gerðr and Óðr is debated. Óðr is mentioned in the Eddas very briefly as a husband of Freyja, but nothing more is actually known about him, although Óðr is often listed as one of Odin's alternate names.
There is a possible connection between Heimdall and the Vanir, noted by H.R. Ellis Davidson. [1]
The gods Njörd and Freyr appear in Snorri's Ynglinga saga as human Kings of Sweden. Their human descendants on the Swedish throne may be called Vanir, such as:
The Vanir have a deep knowledge of magical arts, so that they also know the future. It is said that it was Freyja who taught magic to the Æsir.
The Vanir practiced endogamy and even incest, which were both forbidden among the Æsir. As an example: brother and sister Freyr and Freyja were both children of Njörðr and his sister (possibly Nerthus) [citation needed]. Freyr and Freyja are also described as having been married [citation needed] when they arrived as hostages among the Æsir, although their children (if any) are not listed [citation needed], and as having been required to find other spouses among the Æsir and the giants [citation needed].
Early pagan Norse either chose between cults of the Vanir, Æsir, or both. Areas where fishing and boating were prominent tended to have greater Vanir cults. Later conflicts with Christians attempting to convert the pagan Norse were especially contentious due to cults favoring the Vanir. [citation needed]

Ce n’est qu’en l’an 1370 que le terme “Nom » a été documenté.

The Lydian language is the same as Etruscan (Ukrainian) and it is understandable to everyone who speaks Ukrainian fluently.
According to the Linguists the Lydian language is Indo-European. This decipherment also shows that the Etruscan language is basically the same as a present day Ukrainian, hence it is also Indo-European. If Herodotus' statement, that the Lydian migrated to Italy, is true then the Lydian and Etruscan languages may be the same, or closely related to each other.
Greek historian Herodotus wrote that Etruscan were Lydians, who immigrated to Italy from Asia Minor. While the cause of Etruscan migration from Lydia to Italy is very difficult to determine, the fact that Herodotus himself was born in Asia Minor, give some hope that there is some truth in his writings

Ukraine, formerly The Ukraine (when as a part of USSR), is a country in eastern Europe which borders the Black Sea to the south, the Russian Federation to the east, Belarus to the north and Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova to the west.
Current Ukrainian territory was a southern part and the site of the capital of the first Slavic state, Kievan Rus. The state was founded by Swedish Vikings, the so called Varangians or Rus' (see Rurik), who gave the Ukraine its first powerful dynasty, the Rurik dynasty. During the 10th and 11th centuries these Vikings in the east created the largest and most powerful state in Europe and, ironically, laid the foundation for Ukrainian nationalism through subsequent centuries. Weakened by internecine quarrels and Mongol invasions, soutern parts of Kievan Rus were incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and eventually into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; northern parts formed Mongol dependent Muscovy (Moscow Rus). The Ukrainian province of the Commonwealth had considerable amount of freedoms and autonomy, while soon independent Muscovy turned into despotic tyranny.
During the mid-17th century an autonomous Ukrainian state, the Cossack Hetmanate, was established in the central Ukraine that remained for well over a century despite continuous Muscovite pressure. However, the rest of Ukraine, was split between Poland and Russia. During the latter part of the 18th century, central and eastern parts of Ukrainian ethnographic territory were annexed by the Russian Empire, with the west becoming part of Austria-Hungary. Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, Ukraine was briefly independent until 1920.
The country was reconquered and experienced a Soviet rule that engineered two genocidal famines (1921-1922 and 1932-1933) - known as the Holodomor - in which over 8 million died. In World War II, Nazi German and Soviet armies were responsible for some 7 million more deaths. However, after the WWII, Ukraine borders where extended to the West by shifting Poland, see Curzon line, and to the East by acquiring Crimea. Renewed independence was achieved in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union and Ukraine was a founding member of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Lydian
Lydian was an Indo-European language, one of the Anatolian languages, that was spoken in the city-state of Lydia in Anatolia, present day Turkey. It became extinct around the first century BC and was replaced by Greek. The language is known from a few brief inscriptions. Lydian had its own alphabet that was closely related to the Greek alphabet.
Most spoken European-languages belong to the Indo-European superfamily. There are, however, language families which do not. The Finno-Ugric language family, which includes Hungarian, Estonian, Finnish and the languages of the Saami, is an example. The Caucasian language family is another. The Basque language is unusual in that it does not appear to be related to any known languages..
The Maltese language and Turkish are two examples of languages spoken in Europe which have definite non-European origins. Turkish being Turkic, and Maltese being largely derived from Arabic
It has been proposed that Indo-European languages are
part of the hypothetical Nostratic language
superfamily; this theory is controversial.

Proto Indo-European
The original homeland
of the speakers of Proto-Indo-European (PIE) is not known for certain,
but probably lies somewhere around the Black Sea. Most of the subgroups diverged
and spread out over much of Europe and the Middle East during the fourth andand
third millennia BC. Discussion of PIE culture has been stalled by its association
with the racist doctrines of National socialism (German and
German-influenced scholars of the 19th and early 20th centuriess ominously
preferred the terms "Indo-Germanic", or "Aryan"), but enormous amounts of work
have been done on its structure and vocabulary. All Indo-European languages are
inflected languages,
and by reconstruction scholars were able to see that PIE was probably mildly
inflected (less than Latin but more than modern English). In speech, it is
conjectured to have used the following phonemes:

The main alphabet used by
Sanskrit is the
Devanaagarii, which can be
divided into several parts according to diverse approaches. So, let us see the
alphabet and learn how to pronounce the letters in the following section. One
more thing, the "lrii" is not considered here, because it is a
theoretical and rarely used vowel. With ' theoretical' I mean that it was
invented to maintain the pairs short/long: a/aa, i/ii, etc, so that the
"lri" is not without its long counterpart.

One of the remarkable
things about Sanskrit is that the consonants are syllabic, that is to say, they
carry the vowel 'a'. Without the 'a' they could not be pronounced, because the 'a' is the supreme letter. Most of the vowels (except the Anusvaara 'm' and the Visargá 'h')
can be pronounced by themselves, without the necessity of consonants or other
vowels, but the consonants cannot be pronounced without vowels. This clearly
speaks of an entire philosophical model hidden in these simple characters. The
vowels and their sounds have predominantly to do with what is superior and
independent, while the consonants (mainly those of the first and second groups)
have predominantly to do with lower stages of the Creation. The topic is far
more extensive, no doubt. This has only been a mere "hint" of a
peculiar characteristic of the Sanskrit: it is a language extremely elaborated
in total agreement with a science that hides itself behind it. This is the
wonderful thing regarding this language. Lastly, the vowel 'm' (denominated
Anusvaara), just as its name points out, always comes after a vowel that gives
it support (in the formal alphabet it is used, of course, the ' a' to give it
support). The vowel 'h' (denominated Visargá) also needs the
vowel support, being represented in the alphabet united with the 'a'.
One more thing, apart from these characters that compose the formal Alphabet,
there is a series of signs 'hybrid', which are the combination of two or more
formal characters. For example:
Ä (tta) * (dya) ¼ (nga), etc. Go to Conjuncts for more information.

Lithuanian language
Lithuanian is considered one of the most archaic of
the living Indo-European
languages. It is one of two (another is Latvian)
living Baltic family of
languages, which is perhaps closest to the Slavic
family. It is the official language of Lithuania, spoken by about 3.5 million
native Lithuanians.
Like most of the Indo-European languages, Lithuanian employs modified Roman script (including 32 letters). There are two grammatical genders
in Lithuanian. It has the free stress. Each noun is declined in seven
cases: nominative,
genitive, dative, accusative,
instrumental,
locative, and
vocative. The
1st scientific Compendium of Lithuanian language was published 1856/57
by August Schleicher,
a professor at Prague University.
In older literature on Baltic languages, "Lithuanian" can sometimes refer to Baltic Languages in general.
78. Notes:
Sanscrit v a nth vanth to move ,to go unaccompanied;
à la 2ème pers du singulier masculin laka, tu as, لك
ou peut êtreلك lik à la 2ème personne du feminin ;
· JANIK pourrait venir de Janiculum, qui signifiait Italie pendant l’Antiquité, donc peut-être aussi Etrusques, puisque c’est là que les Etrusques habitaient et sans que l’on sache avec certidude d’où ils sont venus, certains trouvent des similarités entre l’Etrusque et le Lydien donc avec l’Ukrainien ;
Lih ,leh, latin lingo anglais to lick, allemand lecken
Ukończył studia: humanistyczne, matematyczne i
astronomiczne na uniwersytecie w Krakowie, a później kontynuował je w
Bolonii.
płaska, wokół niej krąży księżyc i
wypowiedzią sprzeciw i wrogość kościoła i wielu
tamtejszych uczonych. Wypowiadali się o nim niezbyt pochlebnie. Jednym z
nim był LUTER- reformator i założyciel kościoła
ewangelickiego: powiedział „Ten błazen chce mi wywrócić cala
sztukę astronomii”. Stopniowo wszyscy przeciwnicy nauki Kopernika min.
Zostawili jednak Johannesa Kuplera,
który podbudował system kopernikański. Później Galileusz
odkrywca swobodnego spadania ciał, zbudował jako pierwszy lunetę
by badać niebo. Dzięki temu nauki Kopernika coraz bardziej się
potwierdzały. To przesadziło o losie Galileusza. Ponieważ nie
chciał zataić wyników swoich badań, trybunał inkwizycji
zmusił go pod groźbą tortur, do odstąpienia
swoich tez. Dlatego dopiero przed śmiercią wyraził zgodę na
ich przedstawienie i wydrukowanie. Jednak śmierć była szybsza i
autor nie doczekał się wydania.
The scolars of Bulgaria (in H.Danov, M.Tsoncheva), Romania and Moldova (I. Nikulitse) studied Thracian-Dacian.

In east Slavs also the Russian science (B Ribacov, V. Sedov, V. Propp - let alone such classics, as A. Afanas'ev and F. For example, strong schools Etruscology have developed, for example, in Germany (Ý. Gerhard, item. Court, E.Rashinger) and Russia (P. Modestov, A. Nemirovsky). The same can be told and about cultures the Hittities and the Zoroastrian Persians.

The oldest settlement in Cēsis is the hill fort on Riekstu hill, a fortified wooden castle built by a tribe known as the Vends. The 18m high mound with its partly-preserved fortification system can still be seen in the Castle Park. This settlement was located near major trade routes from west to east and commanded the regional countryside.
German crusaders known as the Livonian Order began construction of a castle (Wenden) near the hill fort in 1209. When the castle was enlarged and fortified, it served as the residence for the Order's Master from 1237 till 1561, with periodic interruptions. In 1577 the garrison destroyed the castle to prevent it from falling into the control of Ivan the Terrible. It was rebuilt afterwards, but was destroyed again in 1703 during the Great Northern War by the Russian army and left in a ruined state. Already from the end of the 16th century, the premises of the Order's castle were adjusted to the requirements of the Cēsis castle estate. When in 1777 the Cēsis castle estate was obtained by the Count Sievers, he had his new residence house built on the site of the eastern block of the castle, joining its end wall with the fortification tower. Since 1949, the Cēsis History Museum has been located in this New Castle of the Cēsis castle estate. The front yard of the New Castle is enclosed by a granary and a stable-coach house, which now houses the Exhibition Hall of the Museum. Beside the granary there is the oldest brewery in Latvia, Cēsu alus darītava, which was built in 1878 during the later Count Sievers' time, but its origins date back to the period of the Livonian Order. Further on, the Cēsis castle park is situated, which was laid out in 1812. The park has the romantic characteristic of that time, with its winding foot-paths, exotic plants, and the waters of the pond reflecting the castle's ruins.
[edit]
Monument of Victory in Cēsis
The planning of the town of Cēsis was done in the second half of the 13th century. The market place with a church was in the centre of the town. The centre of housing was the stone castle of the Livonian Order with its three fortified forecastles. The town was also encircled by a dolomite stone wall with eight towers and five gates. Buildings from the medieval ages include St. John's Church (built 1281-1284), the ruins of the Order's castle, and fragments of the fortification walls at Vaļņu and Palasta Streets. In addition, the ancient road network and building plots have survived from medieval times, although many of the buildings themselves have been ruined through wars and fires (the last in 1748). Buildings from the 18th century can be seen at 16 and 25 Rīgas Street, while houses built in the first part of the 19th century are at 15 and 47 Rīgas Street, 6 Gaujas Street, and other urban roads.
In the second half of the 19th century, the construction of the Rīga-Pleskava highway (1868) and the Rīga-Valka railway line (1889) facilitated the development of the town. Raunas Street, leading from the railway station to the Old Town, was developed as a wide, presentable street with the Latvian Society House at 10 Raunas Street (architect A. Malvess), the Building of the Regional Court at 14 Raunas Street (architect P. Mengelis), and other important buildings.
Cēsis also developed as a health resort. Posh summer houses and health centres were built in the vicinity of the Gauja. 'Cīrulīši' near the Svētavots (Holy Spring) Cave is the most famous of them, with a spring believed to possess healing powers.
Cēsis is still a favourite for tourists and guests who appreciate its calm and peaceful flow of life, so characteristic of a small town.
Cesis
Related: Russian Geography
(tsā´sēs, -zēz) , Ger. Wenden, town (1989 pop. 22,013), central Latvia, on the Gauja River. It is a rail terminus, an agricultural market town, and a popular summer resort. Founded in 1209, Cesis was the seat of the Livonian Knights and became a member of the Hanseatic League. In 1561 it passed to Poland-Lithuania. Attacked by the forces of Ivan the Terrible in 1577, the fortress was blown up by its own garrison. Cesis was transferred to Sweden in 1629, to Russia in 1721, and to newly independent Latvia in 1918. It was the site in 1919 of a Latvian victory over a German free corps. The name also occurs as Tsesis. The name of the town also occurs as Tsesis and Zehsis. |
The Vends were a small tribe who in the 12th-16th century lived in the area around the town of Wenden (now Cēsis) in what is now north-central Latvia. The origin of the Vends and their language is disputed; sometimes they are associated with the Western Slavic Wends, while other researchers believe they spoke a Finnic language and were related to the neighboring Livonians and the Votians.
Prior to their arrival in the area of Wenden in the 12th century, the Vends are believed to have settled by the river Venta near the present city of Ventspils in western Latvia. Their proximity to more numerous Finnic and Baltic tribes inclined the Vends to ally with the German crusaders, who began building a stone castle near the older Vendian wooden fortress in 1207. The castle of Wenden later became the residence of the Master of the Livonian Order.
Vends may have a connection with the national flag of Latvia. The Rhyme Chronicle of Livonia (Livländische Reimchronik) states that in 1290 when the local militia was recruited to defend Riga, they came from Wenden with a red banner crossed by white, "in the manner of the Vends".
The last known record of the Vends' existence as a distinct entity dates from the 16th century.
Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vends"
Wends (German: Wenden, Latin: Venedi) is the English name for some Slavic people from north-central Europe particularly the Sorbs living in modern-day Germany. The name is derived from Venetians (germ. Veneter) a term used for various non-Germanic tribes (similar to the term Welsh (germ. Welsch)).
The term has not historically enjoyed consistent usage - it is mostly employed specifically for one or two Slavic groups but in the past it was often used as an over-arching term for all Slavic people. As a result, it is still difficult today to present a coherent picture of the Wends as a people.
The term Wends was presumably used in history in the following meanings:
1. The Franks referred to most Slavs living between the Odra and Laba as either Wends or Sorbs, while in Slavic literature these people are called Polabian Slavs.
2. In general - a German name for West Slavic people formerly inhabiting teritories of pre-WW2 Pomerania and Eastern Germany. The term Wends was used in connection to all Slavs inhabiting west of Poland and north of Bohemia - Polabians, Pomeranians and Sorbs.
3. German and English name for Sorbs, a Slavic people who moved into Central Europe during the great migration, most likely in response to pressure by the westward movement of warlike peoples such as the Huns and Avars. Some of their descendants, also called Wends or Lusatian Sorbs (Lužički Srbi), still live in Lusatia today, where the Sorbian language is maintained in schools. Many Wends were driven out of Prussia during the revolutions of 1848. The Prussian (German Imperial) government insisted that Wends living in the area give up their language in schools and other public arenas. Moreover, the Wends who wished to continue living in the Empire were compelled to practice Lutheranism. A large part of the Wendish population of Prussia emigrated to countries that welcomed immigrants as a source of cheap labor, including the United States and Australia. In the United States, the majority of Wends landed in Texas, where they became some of the earliest members of the Missouri Synod of the Lutheran church. A notable settlement of Wends in Texas is the town of Serbin, in Lee County, where a church, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, stands as a typical example of Wendish architecture. In St. Paul's, the pulpit is located in the balcony of the church.
4. German name for Kashubians.
5. Some Finnish historians claim that the words Wends or Vandals used in Scandinavian sources occasianally meant all peoples in Eastern coast of Baltic from Pomerania to Finland, including some Finnic peoples. The existence of these supposed Finnic Wends is far from clear. In 13th century there was indeed a people called Wends or Vends living as far as in Northern Latvia around the city of Wenden and it is not known if they were indeed Slavs as their name suggests. Some researchers think they were related to Finnic speaking Votians.
Ventspils (Russian: Вентспилс, formerly Виндава; German: Windau, Polish: Windawa, Livonian: Vǟnta) is a city in northwestern Latvia on the coast of the Baltic Sea. It is named after the Venta river, which passes through the city. Ventspils's population was estimated in 2004 to be about 39,600. It is located at 57°25′ N 21°32′ E.
Ventspils developed from a castle of the Livonian Order and was first mentioned in chronicles in 1290. It was chartered in 1314 and became an important mercantile city of the Hanseatic League.
Ventspils is an important ice-free port. Large amounts of oil and other mineral resources from Russia are loaded aboard ships at Ventspils. The revenue from port services has made Ventspils the wealthiest city in Latvia.
The city has a university college, Ventspils Augstskola, and a basketball team that has won the Latvian championship in the last several years. In the 2001/2002 season, the team took third place in the NEBL.
Ventspils Airport, one of the three international airports in Latvia, is located in the city.

Teutons
This entry is about the Teutonic people, not to be confused with the Teutonic Knights.
The migrations of the Teutons and the Cimbri
The Teutons (Teutones) were mentioned as a Germanic people in early historical writings by Greek and Roman authors. According to Ptolemy's map, they lived on Jutland, whereas Pomponius Mela placed them in Scandinavia (Codanonia)[1] (http://www.northvegr.org/lore/sagabook/n003.php).
There is debate as to whether they were a Celtic or Germanic people since the name Teutones itself appears to be Celtic; Strabo and Velleius, however, counted them among the Germanic tribes. German historians did not associate the name Teutons with their Germanic ancestors until the 13th century.
More than 100 years before the birth of Christ, many of the Teutones, as well as the Cimbri, migrated south and west to the Danube valley, where they encountered the expanding Roman Empire.
During the late 2nd century BC, the Teutons are recorded as marching south through Gaul along with their neighbors, the Cimbri, and attacking Roman Italy. After several victories for the invading armies, the Cimbri and Teutones were then defeated by Marius in 102 BC at Aquae Sextiae (near present-day Aix-en-Provence).
The terms "Teuton" and "Teutonic" have sometimes been used in reference to all of the Germanic peoples. "Teut-" is a western Indo-European word root meaning "people," and is not only found in German deutsch (= "German") and Old Norse thjod "people," but also in the Romance word for "all" (as in Latin totum, French tout, and Spanish todo). It is therefore sometimes used as a synonym of proto-Germanic. Also note the Irish and Scottish Gaelic word for "people," tuath.
